April 4 - part 2

The zooplankton samples are preserved in formalin buffered with sugar. Here is a newly-collected sample stored in a glass sample jar. The brown material at the bottom is zooplankton, and the lighter fuzzy green layer at the top is phytoplankton. We think we may have sampled the spring phytoplankton bloom which occurs each year in northern lakes. We add stickers and write when and where the sample was collected so we can keep accurate information. JC and Tristan did a great job collecting samples today!
Eight zooplankton samples from eight sites.

So we were very pleased today to have caught 14 larvae today. Orlane & Marine processed the fish in the lab. This included length measurements and the removal of guts to assess diets. This little fish is about 14 mm. A normal hatch size is 12 mm. So exciting!
It was a gorgeous day. Check out the video. The surface was like glass.
